Many people think that having "good connections" to the media makes all this happen.
Bullshit.
Knowing who to go to, how to pitch, having a great story, having a good message and how to pitch is how this really works.
Do I have "connections" in the media? After 20 plus years of doing this, of course I do. But I don't use my connections for that purpose. If I think I have a good story for someone I "know" by all means I will reach out to that person. But the reality is that most of the hugely successful pitches that wind up on CNN, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, coverage in specific industry vertical media, and industry specific blogs happen because of the approach I take and how I execute.
