aparat of the trivial answers (links, directories etc) i would think of content as marketing tool
for instance. technical articles, popolar advices stc. I will also add to the credibilty of the site.

any other ideas ?

You need to specify what exactly do you mean when you say "a building engineer website". More information is required regarding the type of service / product this website provides or promotes, what is the target audience (B2B? B2C?) and what is the business focus. Without this sort of background any (good!) suggestion might be a misleading one.

i would put some pictures of your finished projects, make "case studies"
tell about problems and how you solved them
